Church Membership

                                                  Church Membership

Why become a church member ?

When we become a Christian, the Bible teaches that we also become members of "The Body of Christ", which is another way of saying "His Church". Throughout the New Testament, we believe that there is an implicit encouragement for Christians to commit to a local church - to ‘put down roots’, build friendships and serve God alongside others.

Our ‘church leaders’ are called ministers and deacons because they are called to be servant leaders. Together they meet to pray and to get a sense of God’s leading, but the final responsibility for agreeing and implementing what we feel God is saying to us as a church rests with the church members who meet together a few times a year to worship, pray and discern God’s will concerning the church.

Who can become a church member?

Church membership is open to all committed Christians who profess Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour. Prior to Church membership, you should have already made a public profession of your faith including baptism by total immersion in water and must strongly believe that God has called you to belong and serve at Kenton Baptist Church. We would prefer that any proposed future church member has attended Kenton Baptist Church for a period of at least 6 months and is actively involved in the church (e.g serving in a particular part of the church such as Sunday School etc).

What are the responsibilities of becoming a church member ?

  • Regularly attending Sunday Services and participating in Church activities such as prayer meetings
  • Regular participation of the Lord’s Supper (Communion)
  • Spending good quality time on a daily basis in personal prayer and Bible study, so that you grown in your relationship with Jesus.
  • Assisting the Church wherever possible by using your gifts and abilities to advance the purpose of the church through its activities
  • Regularly attend and participate in Church Members’ Meetings throughout the year
  • Financially support the Church on a regular monthly basis (Tithing)
  • Upholding Christian values (Such as the Fruit of the Spirit)

How do I apply for church membership ?
  • If you are interested in becoming a Church member, then please speak to the Pastor.
  • The Pastor will then speak to the Deacons and then arrange for two Church members to meet with you and talk to you about Church membership.
  • After your meeting, both the Church members will give a report to the Church members in the next church member's meeting. With regards to the report, this will include the significance of your faith in Jesus Christ and something of your background. At the Church member's meeting, the members who are present at the meeting will vote on whether to receive you as a new member.
  • Upon being approved as a Church member, you will be warmly welcomed in front of the church congregation at a subsequent Church service by the Pastor. Additionally, a certificate of church membership will be issued to you as confirmation of your membership.

If you have any questions about church membership, then please speak to Pastor Steve.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Service starting at 10:30am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you will be greeted by someone from our Welcome Team.

We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the service (and sometimes even cake !). It is a great way to meet people, or simply take time to find your bearings. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility

There is wheelchair access, and the church operates a ‘loop’ system for those with impaired hearing. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There is a disabled toilet in the main foyer.

Our Service

The Sunday service begins at 10:30am with a warm welcome from our Pastor followed by a call to worship. Then follows a time of sung worship, led by our worship team. We typically start the service by singing a selection of contemporary worship songs. We then share news and notices, usually about what’s going on in the life of the church and then we have a time of prayer. Following on from this, we sing another two or three reflective songs. Our Pastor or a visiting preacher will then give a sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We then finish with a final song. Sometimes there is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service.

What about my children?

We have a great programme lined up for children of all ages:

  • Creche (0 months to 3 years). Children under 6 months are welcome but must be accompanied by their parent/grown-up at all times.
  • New Beginnings (4-16 years)

Children stay with their parent or grown-up at the start of the service for the welcome, songs and notices. We really value worshipping God all together as a family. At the end of the notices someone will announce that it’s time for the children to go to Sunday School.

The children's group activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, bible stories, testimonies, praying, music, craft, drama, fun games and free play.

If you have any questions regarding our Church, then please contact us.

We hope that whoever you are, you will feel at home at our church.

God Bless You and see you very soon at Kenton Baptist Church
